Santiago Launches Major Road Repair Campaign

Chile's Ministry of Public Works is conducting a major campaign to repair roads and seal potholes in Santiago and surrounding areas. The initiative aims to improve safety and restore traffic on roads that have deteriorated due to neglect from past administrations.

Due to the progressive deterioration of streets in Santiago, the Ministry of Public Works (MOP) is maintaining an extensive and sustained campaign to repair and seal potholes, aiming to improve road safety and restore normal traffic flow in the urban area and other strategic points in the region. Authorities acknowledge that accumulated neglect from past government administrations contributed to the widespread deterioration of roads in Santiago and several districts in the province. These efforts seek to recover urban infrastructure and ensure safer traffic conditions for the population. Humberto Della Togna, the regional director of MOP, reported that the so-called 'pothole sealing campaign' is not limited to the main streets of Santiago but also extends to the districts and the Pan-American Highway, which shows significant deterioration in several sections of its road structure. 'We are working intensively on palliative solutions that allow for immediate improvement of road conditions, while more in-depth interventions are being planned,' he specified. Della Togna explained that the works are executed following a priority plan, first addressing critical points where pavement damage poses a greater risk to drivers and pedestrians. Among the areas impacted by the campaign is the road from La Florecita in Santiago to the district of Atalaya, as well as other sectors where vehicular traffic had become almost impossible due to the advanced state of disrepair of the streets. The entity assures it will continue to reinforce these road maintenance efforts as part of a comprehensive initiative.
