Fernando Gago will become the new head coach of Universidad de Chile, almost a year after leaving Boca Juniors. Although there is no official confirmation yet from the Chilean club, 'Pintita' has everything arranged to become the new manager of one of the most successful clubs in the neighboring country. This way, Gago will have his sixth experience as a head coach, after his spells at Aldosivi, Racing, Chivas de Guadalajara (Mexico), Boca, and Necaxa (Mexico). Gago's coaching career began in 2021 when he arrived at Aldosivi, with which he finished with a very negative record. His next experience was at Racing, where, despite winning two titles (2022 Champions Trophy and 2023 International Super Cup), he left in the worst possible way after losing the Avellaneda classic against Independiente 0-2 at home at the end of 2023. After a brief spell at Chivas de Guadalajara, Gago fulfilled his dream of coaching at Boca, although the results did not accompany him and he stepped aside after losing 1-2 in a Superclásico against River. His last team was Necaxa, where he left the post after just 20 matches, of which he won five, drew six, and lost nine. Universidad de Chile, for its part, is going through a very poor moment. Currently, it is eighth in its country's league with only 10 points in as many games, and to make matters worse, it was eliminated in the first qualifying round of the Copa Sudamericana.
