Francisca Curihuinca Calcumil, 70 years old, has been detained in the Temuco prison for 24 days, facing accusations of simple threat, theft of wood, and illicit association, with the Presidential Delegation of La Araucanía among the complainants. The arrest occurred during a violent raid against the Pedro 'ancuan Curihuinca community on January 24, where one of her sons, Ernesto González, was also detained and is currently in Pitrufquén prison.
Francisca Curihuinca, a Mapuche woman with reduced mobility, suffers from various underlying diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, osteoarthritis, anal ulcers, and lupus. Despite having no criminal record and her fragile health condition, judges decided to keep her in prison for two months, a decision upheld by the Temuco Court of Appeals.
Cristina Llao Calcumil, Francisca's sister, has expressed concern over the physical and mental deterioration of the elderly woman in prison. According to her, due to confinement, her blood pressure has increased, and she suffers from disorientation, memory lapses, and panic attacks that make her fear for her life. The family has held Gabriel Boric's government accountable, which also filed charges against the elderly woman, for any fatal outcome due to her delicate health condition.
Through CONADI, Francisca managed to recover her lands in 1994, thus starting a long history of harassment by local forestry companies. The woman has been acquitted in the past for similar offenses, and now her family fears her health will deteriorate even further in prison, where she has been provided with only two sets of clothing, despite her excessive sweating problems and anal ulcers that could worsen.
