Chilean authorities said on Tuesday that five tourists died in a heavy snowstorm in a park in Patagonia, in the south of the country.
According to officials, the tourists were in a mountainous area when the bad weather hit them. Rescue operations were hampered by difficult weather conditions and the remoteness of the incident.
"This is a tragedy," said one official. "We are doing everything we can to identify the victims and notify their families."
Authorities have urged tourists to be extremely cautious and check weather conditions before heading to the mountainous regions of Patagonia.
