A man and his son experienced a terrifying moment while kayaking in the Magellan Strait, near Chile, when a humpback whale attempted to swallow them. They reached the shore safely after the incident.

Dramatic Kayak Encounter with Humpback Whale

During kayaking along the shores of Chile, a young man named Adrian Simankas was attacked to death when a whale began trying to swallow him. The young man and his father miraculously survived thanks to the cold water around them. The father, who was nearby in another kayak, filmed the incident on video. Adrian said: "I thought I was going to die."

Simankas was enjoying his hobby in the Magellanic strait when a whale unexpectedly emerged from the water and attempted to swallow him and his small yellow kayak. "I thought it was going to swallow me, that it was going to devour me," he said. Fortunately, the whale released him after a few seconds, at which point his father shouted at him, "Stay calm, just stay calm."

Simankas admitted: "When I jumped up and started to swim, I was afraid that something would happen to my father, that we wouldn't make it to the shore in time or that I would be subject to hypothermia." The Magellanic strait is one of the main tourist attractions in Patagonia, located approximately 1,600 miles (3,000 kilometers) south of the capital Santiago.
