Almost two weeks after the tragic incident in which a surfer was struck by a fishing vessel, the identity of the victim, Javiera Ortiz, has been revealed. This event has raised concerns about the safety of surfers in the area, known for its complicated maritime conditions.
The driver of the vessel mentioned that he did not see Javiera in the water before the collision. Local residents and fishermen have pointed out that the intense waves force boats to move at high speeds close to the shore to reach land, which can result in accidents like this.
In a video shared on social media, the moment the boat impacts the young surfer due to the speed at which it was moving can be seen. Javiera was near the shore at the time of the incident, and despite being taken to a medical center, the injuries turned out to be fatal, causing her death at the age of 34.
The boat driver was arrested, according to reports from the media in Chile, but was later released once the judicial investigation was concluded.
