Sheinbaum Criticizes Kast's Vindication of Pinochet's Regime

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, yesterday called for a historical and democratic reflection on the election of far-right José Antonio Kast as the next president of Chile, and criticized his vindication of authoritarian regimes like that of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990). During her press conference at the National Palace, Sheinbaum emphasized that the electoral result in Chile must be respected as it is a democratic decision by the Chilean people, although she expressed concern over the elected president's public acknowledgment of the dictator. "Beyond the fact that he won democratically and was recognized by all political forces, what is striking is his vindication of Pinochet," she noted. The head of state recalled that in 1973, Chile experienced a coup against the democratically elected president Salvador Allende, an event that led to a dictatorship characterized by repression, murder, and the disappearance of political opponents.
