Chile Withdraws Support for Bachelet's UN Candidacy

The Government of Chile announced on Tuesday its decision to withdraw the country's official support for the candidacy of former President Michelle Bachelet for the position of United Nations Secretary-General. Her candidacy is still backed by Brazil and Mexico. "We have come to the conclusion that, given the context of these elections, the dispersion of candidacies from Latin American countries, and the differences with some of the key actors defining this process, this candidacy and the eventual success of this bid have become unviable," stated Chile's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a communiqué. In addition to withdrawing Chile's sponsorship, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the country's embassies abroad will cease to participate in the efforts to promote this candidacy, the Ministry added. The Executive concluded that, "considering the trajectory of former President Bachelet and in the event that she decides to continue her candidacy, Chile will refrain from supporting any other candidate in the electoral process," according to the Argentine News Agency.
