Chile Withdraws Support for Bachelet's UN Secretary-General Candidacy

The Chilean government announced it is withdrawing its support for Michelle Bachelet's candidacy for the position of UN Secretary-General. In an official statement, it noted that the "dispersion" of candidates across Latin America and disagreements with key actors in the process make the candidacy "unviable." José Antonio Kast, head of the Chilean government, invited Lula da Silva and Claudia Sheinbaum to Chile to discuss supporting Bachelet. The Chilean government's decision reshuffles the race for the leadership of the international organization, currently headed by António Guterres. In turn, the Mexican president stated that the former Chilean leader is a woman who seeks peace in the world, has a vision for building human rights, for the peaceful resolution of conflicts, and for rebuilding the United Nations as a body for resolving international disputes and a charter of rights for all people in the world. The president also announced that she will soon speak with Bachelet, although she did not provide further details. Bachelet's candidacy was promoted by former Chilean president Gabriel Boric and supported by Mexico and Brazil. Chile's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Tuesday that it had decided to withdraw its support, considering that the current context hinders the success of the candidacy. Claudia Sheinbaum stated on Wednesday that she will continue to support Michelle Bachelet's candidacy for UN Secretary-General, despite the Chilean government withdrawing its support. "We are going to continue supporting her," the president said at her morning press conference, when asked about the decision taken by José Antonio Kast's government to withdraw its support.
