The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, stated this Saturday that he, along with Mexico, will continue to support the candidacy of former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet to become the Secretary-General of the United Nations, despite the rejection from his counterpart, José Antonio Kast. 'Bachelet is highly qualified, with the best resume for the position,' he said. Previously, in February, Bachelet's candidacy was presented by the government of then-Chilean President Gabriel Boric, with the backing of Brazil and Mexico, to succeed António Guterres, whose second term ends on December 31. The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, also reaffirmed last Wednesday her country's support for Bachelet's candidacy. 'She was president of her country twice (2006-2010 and 2014-2018), UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Executive Director of UN Women,' the head of state stated on X. Likewise, Lula affirmed that Bachelet 'has all the credentials to become the first Latin American woman to lead the organization' to promote peace, multilateralism, and place sustainable development at the center of the international agenda.
