Chilean President Gabriel Boric emphasized the importance of strengthening the police force and reinforcing preventive measures to address the wave of violent crimes and the advance of organized crime in the country. Boric declared that it is essential to have strengthened state institutions to face these challenges.
Chile has experienced a decline in its security indices, moving from 29th place in 2008 to 58th in 2023 according to the Global Peace Index. Despite a slight decrease in the homicide rate in 2023 compared to 2022, standing at 6.3 victims per 100,000 inhabitants, there is a significant increase compared to 2018.
Amidst the violence landscape, President Boric stressed the need to strengthen the police and implement more effective preventive strategies to steer young people away from the world of crime through the promotion of culture, sports, and higher quality education.
Boric referred to recent homicides that occurred in various cities in Chile, including Providencia, La Pintana, ViƱa del Mar, and Antofagasta. He highlighted the importance of not weakening in the face of crime and reaffirmed his commitment to work harder to ensure the safety of citizens.
In this context, the Chilean president led the delivery of police vehicles as part of an initiative to equip Carabineros with new cars. With an investment of more than 34 million dollars, the goal is to renew a total of 4,217 police vehicles by 2026, aiming to withdraw up to 57 percent of vehicles with expired useful life from service.
